Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

What Is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on understanding how past experiences and unconscious patterns influence current emotions, relationships, and ways of relating.

The focus of this therapeutic work involves exploring past experiences and unconscious patterns, and understanding how these may shape behaviours and current relationships, aiming at greater self-awareness and emotional insight.

Who Is This Approach For?

Clients best suited for this type of treatment may experience symptoms such as anxiety or depression that do not respond to standard treatments and occur in the context of relationship difficulties.

This work often begins with recognising repetitive patterns in relationships and life situations. Understanding the origins and functions of these patterns is central to the therapeutic process.

This approach is best suited for people who are motivated to undertake their own personal work at exploring longer-term emotional and relational patterns.

The Therapeutic Relationship

The process is a collaborative investigation that evolves in a safe and confidential environment.

This collaboration forms the foundation of the work. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a space where patterns may emerge and be examined, offering opportunities for new understanding and different ways of relating.

Getting Started

Before beginning ongoing psychotherapy, I conduct a thorough assessment to establish suitability for this approach.

Initial Consultation

I am prepared to offer a 15-minute video call at no charge prior to undertaking the assessment. This allows for any preliminary questions about the approach or my practice.

Comprehensive Assessment

I undertake a comprehensive assessment over one to three sessions to establish the patient's suitability for this type of treatment. This careful evaluation ensures the approach is well-matched to your needs and circumstances.

Beginning Treatment

Following the assessment, we discuss the findings together. If psychodynamic psychotherapy is indicated, we establish a regular schedule of weekly 50-minute sessions.
